The goal of the Michigan Beef Safety and Quality Assurance program is to ensure all cattle shipped from a beef production unit are healthy, safe and wholesome, meet federal management guidelines and meets or exceeds consumer expectations.

What is Beef Quality Assurance?

Beef Quality Assurance is a producer-driven program designed to ensure beef and dairy cattle are maintained in a manner resulting in a safe and wholesome beef product for consumers. Specifically, BQA provides education to enhance carcass quality and prevent drug residues, pathogens and carcass defects such as injection site blemishes and bruises. The Michigan Beef Safety and Quality Assurance (MI-BSQA) program is based on recommended national guidelines and scientific research.

Michigan Beef Safety and Quality Assurance Program

The MI-BSQA program is, for the most part, a matter of determining what can go wrong and thinking of solutions to prevent problems from occurring or re-occurring. The purpose of the program is to protect consumer confidence in beef safety and quality. The program was developed through funding by the Animal Industry Coalition at Michigan State University and revitalization of the program has been through the 5 State Beef Initiative, Michigan Cattlemen’s Association, Michigan Beef Industry Commission, Michigan Veterinary Medical Association and Michigan State University Extension.

Michigan BSQA Objectives

  1. Establish and implement Good Management Practices (GMPs).
  2. Establish an effective record keeping system for validation of management activities.
  3. Provide hands-on training and education for participants to meet or exceed the guidelines of the MI-BSQA program and realize its benefits.
  4. Provide technical assistance through Michigan Cattlemen’s Association, MI-BSQA certified veterinarians and MI-BSQA certified Michigan State University Extension (MSUE) staff.

The MI-BSQA program follows the guidelines set by the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA). Three additional requirements are added to the MI-BSQA program:

  • No extra label use of aminoglycosides or related compounds can be used as injectable medications regardless of the animal’s age.
  • No injections behind the slope of the shoulder regardless of animal’s age.
  • No more than 10cc per intramuscular (IM) site.

MI-BSQA Certification

Producers are certified by attending a MI-BSQA training that includes reviewing the BSQA manual, completing the certification test and signing a personal contract. Once MCA receives the certification materials, each participant will receive a copy of their personal contract and a certification card. Certification shows completion and understanding of the MI-BSQA materials and guidelines. Certification cost is $25.00 and is valid for three (3) years. Certification updates will be required after three years.
